S’more Christmas: The 12 Days of Awesome!

Golly gee, friends! The holiday season just flew by this year! But, in case you didn’t know, we have s’more Christmas here at The Christmas Shoppe because it’s Christmas every day! In fact, the Christmas season traditionally keeps going long after December 25th with the “twelve days of Christmas.”

What are the 12 Days of Christmas?

It’s not what you think. Most people confuse the season of Advent with the season of Christmas. They are actually two different seasons.

Advent is the time period leading up to Christmas. In churches, it usually starts four Sundays before Christmas with a celebration on each Sunday and another special celebration on Christmas. In churches, they will light a new candle every Sunday representing hope, love, joy, and peace. Then, on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, the church will light the center candle, which is called the Christ Candle and commemorates that the Light of the World arrived when Jesus was born.

Families typically start celebrating Advent on December 1 with an Advent Calendar, counting down each day of expectation until the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

It’s not just a fun song, either. In recent years, someone came up the idea that each of the twelve days in the song was a secret code. So, the “Nine Ladies Dancing” might represent the nine fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

Too bad, there’s no historical evidence that this is the origin of the song. In real life, it was just a silly song to sing at parties during the Twelve Days of Christmas. Everyone took turns singing a line, and everyone had to sing the repetitions as a challenging challenge.

Now, that doesn’t stop us from adding some symbolism to each day, but the truth is so much better!

The truth is that the Christmas season starts on December 25 with twelve unique holidays that continue to January 6, which is Epiphany or Kings Day or Twelfth Night. (Shh… It’s actually 13 days when you include Christmas and Epiphany.)

You see, churches have a lot of special holidays to celebrate different saints or historical events in church history, and a lot of them happen to fall between Christmas and Epiphany. A lot of people would take a holiday for this entire time period, making it a really fun and relaxing time of year.

As fun as Christmas is, it can be stressful. There are so many fun things to do, and we can’t always get them done before Christmas Day. Even when we do get to do all the fun things, we don’t always get the chance to just enjoy the holiday.

The Twelve Days of Christmas are the perfect time to visit friends and family that you didn’t get the chance to celebrate with. It’s the perfect time to watch the Christmas movies that you missed, bake the cookies that were never baked, put together a Christmas puzzle, or read by the light of a fireplace or Christmas tree.

And, thanks to winter breaks from school, you have the time, too!

Plus, with our BIG after Christmas sale (which lasts until Valentine’s Day, at least), you can enjoy some fun shopping just for you during the Twelve Days of Christmas!
