S’more Christmas: The Third Day of Awesome!
I’m back! And we are talking about third day of the 12 days of Christmas again! This is the year of the Christmastide! Twelve months of the year = twelve blogs = twelve days of Christmas.
You see, most of us in America are totally missing out on the true joy of the holiday season that lasts far past Advent and Christmas Day. It continues all the way to Twelfth Night, aka Epiphany, aka Kings Day.
Now, I did have a customer tell me that they missed Diva Spring Fling because I didn’t do an email reminding everyone that it was coming. So, remember to check out our upcoming events page to see all the upcoming events. FYI: The Corvette Show is this Saturday!
So, today we are delving into the history, the traditions, and the meaning of The Third Day of Christmas, and it has nothing to do with a france or chickens.

When is the third day of Christmas?
If you read our first post, you know that it could be two days. Either December 27 or December 28. That is entirely up to you. If you want to know why or why that matters, you can read our First Day of Awesomeness blog.
We are calling December 28 the Third Day of Awesomeness – uh, I mean Christmas! And December 28 is known as Childermas.
What are we celebrating?

“Celebrate” is not really the best word. Childermas is also known as the Feast of the Holy Innocents, and this very serious holiday was created to remember when Herod sent his soldiers to Bethlehem to kill Jesus as a baby. King Herod knew through the Magi that Jesus would be two years old or younger. So, the soldiers killed all the children ages two and younger in the little town of Bethlehem.
It was a small town. So, some historians think there may not have been many children that died, but it is a very sad thing that happened. There are some historians who don’t think this actually happened because there is only one account of this story, but Herod was known to kill a lot of people. So, maybe it just wasn’t recorded elsewhere because Bethlehem wasn’t well known.
Of course, if you remember your Bible, Joseph had a dream from God warning him to take the baby Jesus and Mary to Egypt until it was safe to return.
How to celebrate The Third Day of Christmas
The story for the day of Childermas is sad, but the holiday has turned into a way to celebrate children!
In Medieval times, they celebrated with a role reversal between children and adults. So, a little boy might lead mass, while the bishop sat in with the congregation, or a children might teach their teachers.
Nowadays, in England, children are blessed and sometimes sing in a children’s choir.
In Spain and Hispanic American countries, it is a day for pranks where those who pull pranks are declared “innocent” of any wrongdoing for the day.
The tradition in Trinidad and Tobago is probably my favorite! Catholic children bring their toys to mass to be blessed.

How would you like to celebrate?

Merry Christmas,
S’more
