S’more Christmas: The Tenth and Eleventh Days of Awesome!
Today, I have a two for one special. We are talking about both the tenth and eleventh days of the 12 days of Christmas! I’m in my Christmastide era!
It turns out that most of us in America are totally missing out on the true joy of the holiday season that lasts far past Advent and Christmas Day. The twelve days of Christmas actually start on Christmas Day and continue all the way to Twelfth Night, aka Epiphany, aka Kings Day.
Plus, twelve days of Christmas are perfect for our blogs because we can do one for every month of the year!
Today we are delving into the history, the traditions, and the meaning of The Tenth Day of Christmas and Eleventh Day of Christmas
When do we celebrate?
If you read our first post, you know that each day of Christmas could be one of two days depending on how you look at it. If you want to know why or why that matters, you can read our First Day of Awesomeness blog.
Long story short, we are ready to talk about January 3rd and January 4th.
Each of the 12 Days of Christmas is a “feast day” or holiday to celebrate a different saint or Bible story.
Except I was wrong! Kind of. Gosh, this is getting confusing. In the west (where we live), churches only have feast days from Christmas to January 1st. There are no feast days for the ninth, tenth, and eleventh days of Christmas.
But the Eastern Orthodox church does! In fact, for January 3rd, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates no less than eleven saints! That’s a lot.
January 4th has even MORE Saints.
However, the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth days of Christmas are all called the “Forefeasts of the Theophany” which just means that they are feast days that lead up to Epiphany.
How to celebrate the tenth and eleventh days of Christmas?
Might I suggest we all take a break. During the winter, the world rests. We should all do the same, if we can.
In fact, that is the entire reason why the Twelve Days of Christmas are all declared to be holidays. When they were invented, most people lived and worked on farms. So, there isn’t much that needs to be done this time of year. It’s the perfect time of year to rest, relax, have fun, and celebrate the goodness of God.
The Scandinavians have a word for this idea of resting and getting cozy during the winter. They call it “hygge,” and it is one of my favorite words.
Therefore, on the tenth and eleventh days of Christmas, I suggest we celebrate by getting cozy!
- Don’t cook. Eat leftover comfort food from all that celebrating or whip up easy meals.
- Enjoy your Christmas decorations – the light of the tree, candles, and Christmas village.
- Drink cozy beverages like hot cocoa or mulled cider.
- Curl up on the couch with a good book or a Christmas movie.
- Take a nap.
